2018 Wedding Season in Review {SUMMER}

As the 2018 wedding season comes to a close, I thought I would take some time to look back on the summer to some of the wonderful events we have been fortunate enough to provide music for as well as some exciting milestones personally.

This year was a huge year for both the quartet and myself personally. We performed for over 50 events this year travelling all over New England to Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, New York and plenty of events here in Massachusetts. We were able to see ourselves perform on national television for the docuseries Married at First Sight and we expanded to include dozens of musicians in the New England area as the Blackstone Valley String Quartet & Ensembles. I personally welcomed my first child at the end of June. It has been a whirlwind summer filled with travel all over New England celebrating the love of so many couples while caring for a newborn at home. So, if we have been a bit more silent than usual on social media that is why! Cue the cute baby pictures!

Now onto a few details from many of the events we provided music for this summer!

Lake George Wedding Ceremony | 6.9.2018

20180609_170159.jpg

This past weekend, we had the opportunity to jump in at the last minute to provide ceremony music for a beautiful wedding on Lake George in Lake George, NY!

It was a beautiful sunny day on the lake and perfect weather for a wedding! Traffic was a bit dicey traveling into the area as a motorcycle event was happening the very same weekend, so we all aimed to arrive early to avoid traffic and enjoy the weather on the lake. I drove out with my husband and we enjoyed a wonderful lake view lunch at The Boathouse Restaurant just down the road.

The music selections for the wedding were a great mix of classical and pop tunes and we had a great time in our run through of the music in rehearsal before the wedding.

Prelude

Tale as Old as Time, Bach Air on the G String, Moon River, Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring, Sleeping Beauty Waltz, A Thousand Years

You Are The Best Thing

Thank you to Pro Arts Management & Consulting for bringing us in! We were thankful that Will Hayes and Esther Witherell were able to join us at such late notice and I had a blast playing with them! I look forward to heading out to Lake George for future events!

Frequently Asked Questions!

F.A.Q.'s

BVQ Logo.png

Why hire the Blackstone Valley String Quartet?

The BVQ is a professional quartet that rehearses on a regular basis. Many quartets are put together just for a particular event or are formed as a side job for the musicians in the quartet. We rehearse and perform together on a very regular basis and have become much more comfortable performing together than a quartet formed for a particular event. Performing and teaching music is a full time occupation for the core members of the BVQ. This allows us to customize music according to your style for your special event. Check out the quartet by clicking here

What are your rates for weddings or other events?

See our "Rates" page for price ranges for rates. Please fill out our contact form to receive a personalized quote.

Are you able to play outdoors?

We are able to play outdoors, but only if weather permits. Our instruments will not function if the temperature is under 60 degrees or if there is any precipitation. For any outdoor performances, we require a location where we can quickly relocate if weather changes.

What type of equipment do you need to perform?

We need chairs and music stands for all performers in order to perform. We can provide these items if the venue is unable to provide them.

Do you require any sound equipment?

Usually, we will not need any type of amplification. Stringed instruments are specifically built to project as much as possible. Occasionally, if we are not performing with the full quartet outside we might need amplification. We are able to provide such amplification if the venue is unable to provide such equipment.

What types of genres to you perform?

We are able to perform almost any genre, including classical, jazz, contemporary, pop and more. Occasionally, pieces do not lend themselves well to stringed instruments, but usually we can accommodate just about any style or genre of music. Especially if we are given plenty of time to put together music, we can usually accommodate most requests. Check out our music catalog by clicking here!

How much are tickets for BVQ performances?

BVQ performances are free! Part of our mission as a quartet is to bring great music to the Blackstone Valley community. We also enjoy the freedom of planning concerts that we find exciting and challenging. For more information on our next FREE community concert, click here!

Blackstone Valley String Quartet Reviews

"The Blackstone Valley String Quartet was absolutely incredible on our Wedding Day! Brittany and her team were professional, responsive and most important- INCREDIBLY TALENTED!!! They played my requested songs perfectly and suggested additional songs once they learned what my Fiancé and I liked. I received so many compliments on how beautifully they played- I would 100% recommended them for any type of wedding or special occasion. I have been in the Hospitality industry for 10+ years doing events and I would be the first person to recommend them as a preferred vendor! Thank you so much!" - Krista, Wedding Ceremony 9/9/2017

"They were amazing!!! My girlfriend/future wife loved them and it made our engagement that much more special!!" - Seamus, Proposal 11/02/2017

"Sylvia & her team are incredibly talented and easy to work with. They played everything from classical to contemporary music and my guests were so happy with the variety of sound! The process was easy from booking right up through the event. Sylvia was always responsive and on top of our planning process. Thank you Blackstone Valley String Quartet! xo" - Jenna, Wedding Ceremony 01/01/2018

"I can't praise the quarter enough! I hired them because I went to the same school as most of the members, but I was blown away by how talented, professional and attentive they were. I worked with Brittany who answered all (dozens) of my questions no matter how big or small. She was super responsive and always upbeat and friendly, genuinely listening to my thoughts, ideas and concerns. She provided me with resources that helped us choose our ceremony music which we really appreciated. We requested a very specific version of my aisle song that I didn't think was possible to copy...but the quartet did it...to a T...way more perfectly than I ever could've imagined! It's amazing how music helps to share your memories of the big day, and I'm so grateful I chose the BVSQ to be a part of those memories. I'd recommend them to anyone!" - Layne, Wedding Ceremony 10/21/2017

"My daughter was married in Newport, RI on the water in an August wedding. I wanted a violin trio to play outdoors before the ceremony while guests arrived to take their seats, for the processional and then the recessional. I went through Gigmasters and after emailing and talking with Brittany, I knew she would be perfect. Brittany suggested her quartet which I decided to go with instead of the trio and I am so happy I did.
The girls showed up on time and played beautifully. A bunch of the guests complimented the music and how beautiful everything sounded and how it lent an elegance to the wedding.
Brittany was very easy to work with, she was polite and very accommodating with times and music choices. There are videos of the quartet playing on their website which demonstrates their wonderful talent, so you know what to look forward to. I would definitely hire Brittany again if I have another event in the future and will also recommend to any friends that are in need of string musicians." - Cheryl, Wedding Ceremony 8/11/2017

"We really enjoyed having the trio play at our wedding. Many guests commented to us about how nice it was to listen to their beautiful music. It set a classy tone to our wedding. They were very accommodating to our personal requests. They were able to back up our wedding singer with no fuss whatsoever. I would highly recommend them!" - Cynthia, Wedding Ceremony 08/05/2017

Unforgettable live music specially tailored for your event

“The Blackstone Valley String Quartet was extremely accommodating and a pleasure to work with. They added the touch of class we wanted for our event. Due to our needs, we were also able to only reserve 2 of the 4 quartet, which we were very pleased with however, after their service we wished we had booked the entire quartet! Thank you for a wonderful evening.

Planning a Catholic wedding?

If you are planning a Catholic wedding, make sure you check in with your church and priest about the music and musicians you would like for your wedding ceremony! Sometimes it is a church or priest rule that you use certain musicians and music. They don't always allow outside musicians! So you definitely want to check with them as soon as possible before hiring musicians for your ceremony!

One of the services we offer along with performing for your ceremony is coordinating with wedding planners, priests, and ceremony officiants! Especially for Catholic ceremonies, once you figure out what your priest and church allows, we are able to communicate about music selections and plan song specifics!

BVQ: Our Story

Blackstone Valley String Quartet: Our Story

L-R: Co-founder & Owner, Sylvia DiCrescentis and Co-founder, Brittany Stockwell

L-R: Co-founder & Owner, Sylvia DiCrescentis and Co-founder, Brittany Stockwell

In 2015, Sylvia and Brittany Stockwell ran into each other at a yoga class. Sylvia had played violin and viola with Brittany at Whitinsville Christian School. Sylvia presented the idea of collaborating as teachers and performers, but Brittany was in the middle of working on her masters in teaching and was too busy to take Sylvia up on her offer at that time. The following year, the Whitinsville Christian School Strings celebrated 35 years with a reunion concert. After reuniting and performing together once again, Brittany was convinced to start working on starting a quartet and music business with Sylvia! Sylvia and Brittany both play violin and viola in the BVQ. Initially it seemed difficult to complete their quartet of musicians. Eventually the Blackstone Valley String Quartet evolved to incorporate Jamie Thiesing (cello) and Laura Sousa Wagner (violin) as resident members along with Sylvia and Brittany. All four young women grew up playing together in the WCS strings program!

 Co-founder & Owner, Sylvia DiCrescentis

Co-founder & Owner, Sylvia DiCrescentis

The Blackstone Valley String Quartet & Ensembles is a dream a long time coming for owner, resident member, and founder Sylvia DiCrescentis. When the BVQ became a reality in the fall of 2016, Sylvia had already been running her own teaching studio, Vivo Strings, in North Grafton, Massachusetts for five years. Although having a passion for and a degree in music education, she always desired to perform and collaborate with other professional musicians. Being a product of the well-known Whitinsville Christian School Strings Program during her middle and high school years, it is no surprise she would eventually team up with fellow musicians from the very same program to realize this dream.

Laura Sousa Wagner (right), Brittany Stockwell (back), Jamie Thiesing (front), Sylvia DiCrescentis (right).

Laura Sousa Wagner (right), Brittany Stockwell (back), Jamie Thiesing (front), Sylvia DiCrescentis (right).

As the 2017 wedding season progressed and the BVQ booked more and more gigs it was obvious for the business to continue to be successful it needed to expand. By the Fall of 2017, the BVQ became the BVQ & Ensembles. Sylvia and Brittany brought on several other WCS strings alum as well as other professional musicians they had worked with to become ensemble members. This enabled the business to offer various ensemble options beyond just a string quartet. The BVQ & Ensembles now offers any combination of violin, viola, cello, piano, guitar, and flute.

Along with performing several times a week, weekly rehearsals as a quartet, and independent practice sessions as individuals, there is a lot of behind the scenes work that goes into making the overall business run!

To make any type of music business successful there is a crazy amount of hustle that happens in front of the curtain but even more so behind the scenes! The first year of business for the BVQ & Ensembles has been an exciting journey which has encouraged Sylvia and Brittany to learn how to balance the business in a way that always puts the music first.

Sylvia, because of her experience with running her own independent teaching studio for five years as business owner and violin/viola/cello/piano teacher, overseas all of the financial aspects of the BVQ & Ensembles. As Booking Manager, Sylvia also handles all contact and bookings with clients. She also spends a lot of time arranging songs so that the BVQ can honor any request (song & ensemble) made by a client. Laura Sousa Wagner, the newest resident member of the BVQ is also working hard behind the scenes arranging songs. Brittany is our blogger extraordinaire, using her experience as an English major and educator to craft blogs containing information about events and education about weddings and music!

On Saturday, February 24th, 2018, the BVQ had the honor of playing Jenna & Adam's entire wedding! Many people hire a DJ for their entire wedding forgetting that there are many different options when it comes to hiring musicians for their special day!

 Flowers by Leslie/ NMWE

Flowers by Leslie/ NMWE

For Jenna & Adam's special day, the BVQ played for their wedding ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, & reception! The end of the night erupted into a dance party when the maid of honor requested popular songs be played from her Iphone. Along with playing covers of popular songs, the BVQ is also able to play live with any playlist of songs. Since the BVQ has the capability of plugging in and playing electric, this enables any combination of BVQ musicians to be hired to play for a reception that includes dancing!

By hiring the entire quartet for your wedding, there is flexibility you might not realize. The venue Jenna & Adam chose for their cocktail hour, dinner, & reception was a lovely old mansion in Portland, Maine. Because there were several rooms in the venue, during cocktail hour & dinner, the BVQ broke up into duos placed at opposite rooms so that guests heard music wherever they were!

For Jenna & Adam's wedding, the BVQ had the pleasure of working with Nicole Mower Weddings & Events!

How to Choose the Right Recessional Piece for Your Ceremony

What makes a good recessional piece?

A good recessional piece first and foremost is something that reflects you as a couple. Second, it should be the most upbeat song in your ceremony - once you're announced husband and wife for the first time, it's officially time to celebrate!

Some favorites include:

La Rejouissance
Vivaldi Spring
Best Day of My Life
Siman Tov
Entrance of the Queen of Sheba
You are the Best Thing

At the end of the day, whatever you choose should mirror the love and commitment you are making to each other! Whether traditional classical songs or modern songs, we have many themes for our clients to choose from. Sometimes the planning process for what songs to choose can be overwhelming, we make choosing songs fun! Check out our themes page by clicking here
